upside down cake

i made a pear upside down cake this weekend. i carmelized the pears in a 10-inch skillet then added the cake dough on top. the pears were great, but the cake turned out rather dense and gooey. perhaps i didn't bake it long enough? does anyone have a good cake recipe? what is the consistency of an upside down cake supposed to be?
