Update on Reata in Alpine

Flew out there for a dinner last Tuesday afternoon and had a really good meal. Started with an appetizer of bacon wrapped shrimp with a charred onion jam and a cornbread star. The shrimp were fresh and large, wrapped in crisp bacon and deftly grilled. The charred onions were a perfect compliment.

I went on to the ribeye steak. I think the grade here was either choice or select and what was advertised as a well marbled steak was in fact quite lean. Still, it had an excellent spice mixture applied before cooking and it was done precisely to order. Sides of mashed potato and steamed broccoli were good, if mundane. My friend's pork loin with house made mango chutney was quite good, although he claimed the chutney lacked authority. I dectected notes of habanero and thought it was just fine. A perfectly cooked medium - medium well pork loin was certainly unexpected, as most places in rural Texas cook pork to the point of ruin.

The service was very good and very friendly. Well worth a stop, if you're in the area or if you're bored and have an airplane.
