Update on black and white cookies

After posting last week, I ordered a used copy of the New York Cookbook that was recommended to me but it has not arrived yet so I made the Epicurious recipe and it was great. I made the change that several people recommended which was to use 1/2 cup of buttermilk and sure enough, I ended up with little sponge cake type cookies (I used a smaller scoop for ease of transport). The very first recipe I used was from "The Good Cookie" by Trish Boyle but her recipe had twice as much sugar as the Epicurious recipe which was what probably made them chewy instead of soft. I wonder if her recipe was a misprint? Anyway, thanks a million for the help. I hope my friend likes them!
