Unusual Middle Eastern sweet

Liana | Mar 30, 2004 08:54 AM

After dinner at Kabob Cafe on Steinway Street in Astoria, some friends and I had desserts at the Middle Eastern bakery a few doors south (I don't remember the name of the place, but it has a gaudy purple electric sign out front). My favorite sweet was a slice of a fresh cheese of some sort, topped with orange zest and paprika and crushed pistachios. It was cut from a huge round pizza-looking slab of cheese about 3/4 inch thick. Does anybody know what that was, or, better, how to make it? It wasn't even very sweet, actually.
