Union square not-too-pricy eats?

Marc Wallace | Oct 9, 200511:07 AM     14

My mom is staying at a hotel right across from Union Square (400 something Powell, I believe) this coming week, and I'm looking for recommendations on where she might find:
- cheap to moderate food ($5-15)
- not too ethnic/exotic, but not just burgers'n'fries
- not too posh

She's from the inner Midwest, so even Mexican is considered a bit exotic -- but she's been out here a couple of times and doesn't mind Chinese or Thai (well, pad thai, at least). As long as they speak Gringo and can recommend dishes.

My best lead so far from searching is Anjou, which is definitely on the far-high end of prices for her.

Thanks!
