I had a fantastic meal at Union Square Cafe last night. My dining partners, however, didn't.
First of all, the service was great. We had a great waitress, but the drinks were very slow to come...
I had the foie gras appetizer, which was excellent. Two slices of foie gras cooked perfectly served with an apricot gel and sweet corn. The sweet apricot was a perfect compliment to the rich foie. My friends got the farfalle, which looked ok, and the tuna tartare, which looked great. I dipped my bread in the mustard sauce afterwards, and it tasted fantastic.
I got the salmon appetizer, despite our waitress leaving it off her list of favorite items, and was rewarded with an unbelievable dish. Top 3 salmon dishes I've ever had. It was in a balsamic sauce on a bed of sweet corn and chanterelle mushrooms. Perfect.
My friends both ordered the tuna, and were vrey unhappy with it. It was warm, not hot, and not tasty at all. My friend's spinach was oversalted, to boot.
We informed the manager of our displeasure, and she insisted on comping the tuna, which was very nice of her. She seemed genuinely concerned and gave us her business cards, which was very professional.
Overall, the only things that were negative about the meal was the tuna and the slow drinks. Every other food item was great and the service was great. So, if you go to Union Square Cafe anytime soon, order a bottle of wine and get the salmon.
