Union Oyster- more trap than I thought

suzyb | Sep 2, 200311:57 AM

I’ve always wanted to sit at the old U-shaped oyster bar at Union Oyster House. We happened to walk by on Labor Day, and since we saw a couple open seats and needed a beer, we popped in. The bartender asked if we wanted oysters, but I noticed that there was a large quantity of plates with already holding 6 pre-shucked oysters. So I asked, “Uhh, They’re already opened?” He said they were “for the house and the people who didn’t know any better- I’ll shuck them for you” (and then abused me for asking that question). So, we ordered our half dozen, to complete our oyster bar experience – they were fine, not wonderful, but fine, but as we were sitting there, sure enough, an order for oysters came in from the dining room upstairs, the guy grabs one of the plates, tosses off an ugly oyster or two, replaces them with some other open ones – then, get this, squirts the whole plate with a shot of water from the bar tap to make them look ‘fresher’. How lame. Well, I’ve had my chance to gawk at the cool old room, so now I never need to go back. I know it’s primarily a tourist trap, but that’s shameful.
