Underwhelmed at Gene and Georgetti

To celebrate our first year in Chicago hubby and I wanted to go to a Chicago Steakhouse. After reading reviews and recommendations we decided on Gene and Georgetti. People either really seemd to love it or hate it. We were undewhelmed - we are glad we went, but probably won't return.
To start we had the baked clams that were small, and the bread crumbs were overpowering and sticky -it was hard to taste the tiny clam underneath. Not a good dish.
We both orderd the bone in strip steak, medium rare. It was just plain bland. It was cooked properly, had a bit of a crust, but really didn't have any flavor. Adding salt didn't help. The sauteed spinach however, was oustanding, sauteed in olive oil with garlic. The crispy sliced potatoes that come with the steak were ok, hit and miss, some were good, nice and crispy but some had already oxidized and were gray - not very appetizing.
We have been to steakhouses in NYC- Sparks(excellent) Morton's (very good) and were kind of expecting that same kind of "wow this is truly great beef" like we had there, but we didn't feel that way at G&G's. Hubby commented he had a better steak at Harry Caray's. I think the steaks we make at home -free range Austrlian Beef from Trader Joe's were almost better than ours at G&G's.
Service was very good - loved our waiter, kind older gentlemen. And they do make a great martini. But I next time, for steak, we will go elsewhere.
