Underpar Vietnamese (Sacto Area)

I can't remember which local Sacramento giveaway had a glowing listing for Bamboo (AKA Pho Vet) at 5060 Madison (at Auburn Blvd), but last night I finally ate there as part of a group of six people. It was some of the least inspiring Vietnamese food I've ever had. I had a soupless rice noodle dish, and the flavors were minimal, with very little fermented fish sauce and fresh aromatic leaves used. The grilled beef had been prepared well in advance, and was far too heavily sweetened. The Cha Gio fried rolls were made with wheat-flour wrappers instead of rice paper wrappers, and were cold and soggy.

It was to Vietnamese food what supermarket-counter "Chinese" is to real Chinese food.

The service was also underpar. Each diner ordered their own noodle dish, and some arrived quickly while others arrived 20 minutes later. Two mistaken dishes were brought to the table.

The strangest part of the entire experience was that we were the only caucasian diners in a large room full of ethnically Asian people.
