Found an amazing restaurant amongst nothingness—My co-worker that knows I venture far and wide for wacky food, told me of this place where he went to fix a gas problem,(we work with Con-Ed) which was actually pretty close to my home in the Bronx. He said it had no sign out front, and from the looks outside didn’t seem to be in operation, but after going in to fix the problem realized it was a full operational restaurant in the evenings, that seemed like something transplanted from SOHO. We decided to check it out 2 Fridays ago--it turned out to be an old take-out restaurant turned into what I can only describe as a Caribbean/Moroccan type lounge with some very good and unusual food for that neighborhood (I live about 2 miles away). I had a fried fish (strawberry grouper it turned out to be, but they call it Jamaican butterfish) with some kind of toasted ethnic bread, and I also had some peppery head-on shrimp that was spicy and flavorful. My friend had some Jamaican jerk chicken that was nothing like I have ever had at any Caribbean spot—seems it is done like in Jamaica on this huge smoking grill that they have in the backyard-where, incidentally, you can also dine with tikki torches and all. It was full of spice and smoke—We also had a Roti (spelling?) that had codfish rolled into the dough that was unbelievable—the drink list was kinda limited, but a rum punch my friend had was good. I just want to say that it's a Welcome Addition to my otherwise crappy neighborhood as far as food goes. It's at 151 Sandford Boulevard West, Mount Vernon, NY-its right where the Bronx turns into Westchester.
