I'll say it -- WOW! I really didn’t expect to be bowled over by ANY Restaurant wWeek offering. Don't get me wrong. I think that R Week is a great way to try good, reasonably priced food but, in general, not an opportunity to really see a venue at its absolute best. My experience has been that the 3-courses offered during R Week are often new dishes or glorified appetizers. Well, Umbria proved me wrong tonight. Each dish we ordered was a regular staple on the menu. And each was fabulous. I don’t use that word lightly; this just really went above and beyond what I was expecting. And each was a full serving unlike other places I’ve tried. Factor in exceptional service (R Week is often known for service lapses) and I promise I’ll be back. (God, I sound like a shill for the restaurant, but I assure you I’m not in any way affiliated. I just LOVE finding a great buy and, to me, this was one)

What I had:

Appetizer: Calamari stuffed with pork sausage on top of broccoli rabe. Three whole calamari tubes filled with a wonderful sausage and breadcrumb (I think) stuffing in an oil and garlic sauce.

Main: “Paccheri di Gragnano al Forno.” Six individual pasta rolls (kinda like mini cannelloni) filled with braised veal short ribs and ricotta filling and surrounded with a cream of spinach and tomato concasse. This was the clear winner of the night for me.

Dessert: Caramel Rum Bread Pudding. Ok, I confess that I am not really a dessert person. I’d have traded in ANY dessert for more of the Main course. However, this was still really good. Nice mixture of textures and surprisingly light.

In terms of value, the app and main on the normal menu are $14 and $20 respectively (if memory serves). Even without dessert, at $30 this is a good deal.

I checked their website and Umbria is offering this deal for an extra week. I may even go back.
