Ate at the Umami Cafe in Fishkill this week. I hear there is one in Westchester County, too. Anyway, I really wanted this to be something interesting. We have a lot of restaurants in the Hudson valley these days and I like many of them. The idea of this one sounded neat. I praise the chefs/cooks for trying to present something a little "Manhattan-like". Sadly, they don't pull it off. Our food was nothing great. I might even say dull at times. There were three of us and only one dish, a special, was tasty. The ingredients seemed less than fresh and there is more fat/salt taste then the promised "umami". Vegetables, what little there was, were particularly poorly prepared. My advice to the owners is to rework this. I still like the idea. One last thought is to lose the desserts altogether. Cheesecake and lime pie were supermarket quality. Another dessert was way too sweet. We couldn't even eat it.
