Ueno Sushi - downtown take-out - good stuff

Tried Ueno Sushi for the first time - it's the new sushi place on Washington Street downtown, next to PI Alley, close to the corner of State - (I say new because it just opened in that location, but apparently Ueno has been in Faneuil Hall for some time - not sure if they have moved or just opened a second branch).

After surveying the lunchbox combos (All $10 when tax is added, all include small salad of iceberg lettuce and slice of tomato), I decided that the Cali Combo was the best deal - 6 pc of California roll and five sushi of salmon, tuna, yellowtail, shrimp and red snapper.

It took a few minutes to make up the combo - nice to know that they were not pre-made...Watch 'em though - although the menu clearly indicates five sushi pieces, they tried to short me on the shrimp. My co-workers were laughing at me as I pointed this out to the befuddled counter guy, but by golly, I wanted what the menu said I would get.

So for the food:

The sushi was well-cut against the grain - nice tender pieces, appropriately sized and served at room temperature -

California roll had good sized pieces of fresh avocado - pretty standard and yummy

The squeeze of wasabi had a good bite to it - a little pickled ginger...

And the side salad was surprisingly good! The dressing, as always, is that strange orange-y stuff, but appeared to be freshly made and was even a little citrus-y - the iceberg lettuce was also very fresh and crisp - it provided a nice counterpoint and the attention to detail to a salad that is usually such a throw-away was nice to see.

They also have other non-sushi options - udon and the like - check it out.
