Saturday morning for me is going to the farmer's market and then finding some grocery store to explore and eating some interesting food for lunch.
The St. Paul Farmer's market opened mostly with bedding plants, meats and cheeses.
One farmer from Menomonie WI was selling old fashioned stewing hens so I bought one to make soup or curry. She had some good literature about the hens.
The egg man also had chicken stories to tell. His chickens had destroyed several bushes in his yard. He was really mad at those little ______s. I liked the story and bought 2 dozen eggs from these lively chickens.
I made a note to myself to try to get to know the farmers and food a little more this year.
I then went off to the Minsk Market in Burnsville. The St. Paul Pioneer Press described this Russian market in a strip mall on Cliff Road and Hwy 13. I spent at least an hour looking at cans and other goods. Interesting. A few doors away was the Russian Taverne where I had a very nice dish of stuffed cabbages. I'd like to try more of their dishes.
