For you Cities chowhounds who don't know what that word in the subject line is, it's a soft corn tortilla filled with beans, cheese, and meat and eaten with this cabbage salad on top. It's sort of the Salvadoran equivalent of a cheese-filled hot dog. Granted, that analogy might not be making you too interested, but you should be. There aren't too many Salvadoran folks around here, thus there aren't too many pupusas. I thought I had tracked down pupusas this summer at this place up on Central in Mpls right near Patel's, but the day I went the Salvadoran cook had been replaced by a Mexican cook who had never seen a pupusa in her life. Anyway. . .
La Hacienda on West 7th in Highland Park in St. Paul has the pupusas!!! You might have passed this little strip mall restaurante by because of the big vinyl Gyros sign it has hanging outside, but it is the real deal. Buen Provecho!
