My fiance and I went to a birthday dinner at Turmerik in Sunnyvale Tuesday night. I thought it was very good, my fiance thought it was even better than that, but it is prohibitively expensive.

We skipped appetizers and got the curry thalis, where you choose two curries out of a list of vegetarian or non-vegetarian curries. I chose spinach kofta and seafood curry and Ali got paneer makhani and sweet & sour baby eggplant w/tomatoes and onions. The kofta (fried balls of spinach puree) were delicious! Probably the best thing at the restaurant - dense, moist, and a lovely shade of dark green, with nuts inside, in a tasty, creamy curry sauce. I'd go back for that dish.

The seafood curry was mediocre - salmon a little fishy tasting, huge scallop a little rubbery, and two prawns just not the best I've ever had. Sauce was good, though, and it stood up pretty well as a leftover.

Paneer makhani (cheese in a reddish curry/butter sauce) was tasty, but nothing really special. The eggplant looked really good (very soft, slow-cooked baby eggplant) but I didn't try it, because Ali cleaned that dish up quick! So it must have been good.

Served with the curries on the thali are daal (which was all right - don't know why, but I'm never that thrilled with daal, even though I love lentils), highly spiced raita, some saag dish (stewed yummy spinach with yucky baby corns which I picked out), and saffron rice that was very nicely done (but a tiny portion). The vegetarian curry thali was $16 or $18 and the meat-eaters thali was $22. A little pricey for what it was, but we had leftovers, despite the small dishes.

My mango lassi was one of the best I've had, with a dash of ground cardamom on top. Didn't get to try desserts, but the various naans were good (we ordered an assortment).

There's quite a selection of tandoori items on the menu, such as wild boar chops and venison, in addition to some standard meats. Nobody at our table got these, possibly because they're all in the $25-$30 range.

Wine list was equally ridiculously priced - there was only one red on the by-the-glass list that was less than $10 a glass! Is that because it's Silicon Valley?

Decor was pretty and service was very good.

I guess I'd have to say if it hadn't been for that spinach & paneer kofta I wouldn't go back to Turmerik, but it's also an hour drive from my home in Berkeley, so that figures in to it. If you're a South Bay denizen you might as well splurge on it if you're craving North Indian food.
