Where to get a turkey for Christmas near Marion or Carbondale, IL?

ryan | Nov 28, 200507:45 PM

I have talked the family into allowing my bf and I to cook the turkey this xmas. The only problem is that I live in Portland, Oregon, and I won't be in town (Marion) until close to the holiday.

What I'd like to do is order something ahead of time to pick up when I arrive, brine, and cook. And while I grew up nearby in Herrin, I have little to no memory of local butchers or decent stores (other than the P&R, of course, but that says "salameats" to me, not "whole turkey). Actually, I'm not sure I ever saw a real butcher shop until I moved to the west coast....

Does anyone have suggestions for where I can place a turkey order for nearby pickup? I'd prefer something organic and non-frozen. I'm not fancy (or spendy) enough for heritage birds yet, so it doesn't have to be too wild. Just something beyond a frozen butterball.
