On a cold winter day, Mom and I stopped at New Tung Kee Noodle House in Gilroy because we needed a quick, light dinner and a rest stop. It had been some years since my last visit to a TK, Luu, or the other iterations and spin-offs of this extended clan’s inexpensive Viet/Teochew/Cantonese noodle houses. No surprises here, the formula menu, low prices, and reliably fast service were just what we needed.
We shared a large size Combination Teochew rice stick noodle soup, $5.75. Prawns, beef balls, pork, chicken, scallions, and cilantro topped the rice noodles. Not particularly tasty, maybe the amount of MSG added has decreased, but perked up with a dab of chile sauce. This meal was warm and familiar, just right to tide us over for the drive home.
What is notable though is that the lady manning the cashier was particularly friendly. She handed me extra fortune cookies for my white-haired mother at no charge. While not the greatest food, New Tung Kee Noodle House can’t be beat for price or speed.
