I feel like very few people would argue the fact that Hemant is most exciting Indian Chef in NYC right now.. I have been following his cooking for many years back to his days at Tamarind and Amma. The guy is amazing... I think after I first tried his lamb chop at Amma, I think the man crush began.. Not to mention, he is so friendly and smiley.. Yeh, i'm a fan..
We went to dinner there last night.. My aunt and uncle are a fan of his cooking as well.. I having taken them to Amma and Devi on several occasions.. My aunt and uncle having traveled extensively through India, it was nice to hear their perspective..
Unknown to us, they were serving a restaurant week menu.. I haven't been to a restaurant week in a long time so I was surprised and happy to see that the Restaurant week menu was actually items off the menu.. In fact, it was such a good deal at 35 dollars a person, we couldn't pass it up..
Before what we ordered came out, the chef sent out a round of appetizers.. Each person got a plate with a little yam fritter and a pea cake of sorts.. The pea cake was sitting in a cold yogurt sauce. But what did it for me was the yam fritter with a little piece of tamarind on top and something spicy on the bottom.. The depth of flavor on the yam cake was crazy.. It was so complex and kind of kept going.. This was amazing..
I ordered a avacado chat and a seafood curry while other people at the table had the lamb, the eggplant tasting, and the a chicken dish.. All of the food was delicious.. Room is beautiful, reminds me of a more relaxed version of Jeanes Georges.. Staff was attentive.. We spent 25 minutes sitting in the lounge area eating the amazing bar nuts, having a few drinks, we then moved on to the table where we spent another 30 minutes after the food had been cleared.. They kept refilling waters and left us to relax..
Restaurant week menu is an amazing deal.. I would go before it ends,, thinking about going back in the next couple of days.
This man is amazing and his restaurant is a wonderful reflection of him.
