Returned to this Smith St. Thai place last weekend after a few months away. The menu seems to have expanded with at least one significant addition: the crispy whitefish salad. (I'm sure that's not quite right but that plus the menu will get you there.) This is a version of the dish that is called, i believe, crispy catfish salad at sripraphai.
It was really great. In the same weird way as the sripraphai version: you know you're basically eating fried air with a vague memory of fish about it, and you feel you have found religion.
Make no mistake, Tuk Tuk isn't up there with Sripraphai, but it seems to me to be getting more and more adventurous and less of a standard-issue New York Thai Restaurant as it tests the limits of gringo appetites. I hope lots of hungry gringos (should that be a new word--hungringos--or has Jim already copyrighted that?) show up.
