Thanks, chowhounds, I'm delighted with the replies. Oldfart is correct about JANOS, succulent food and fine service. Also, WAGS has a great (and great big plated) weekend breakfast where Wags's wife serves up large fresh omlets while Wags himself serves up bad jokes which he dittoes off and hands out if you know to ask. It's a little hole-in-the-wall on Grant near Alvernon, and the best breakfast I've found in town.
Jim Leff, thanks for the report on Mexican food and the great photos...but I'm Mexicaned out. Which gets back to my original point: just because this is the southwest, can't it accomodate east coast cooking? I'm still on a quest for good deli and Philly.
