Tucson Asian Market

Southwest Asian Chinese Tucson

I'm looking for a place to buy Sichuanese peppercorns (and maybe some duck) in Tucson, Az – preferably close to the university area or downtown. Any ideas?

The best Asian market in Tucson is Lee Lee Oriental Market at La Cholla and Orange Grove. There are other Asian markets that are nearly as well stocked or with as good of a meat selection as Lee Lee.

Sorry, it wouldn't let me edit my post. I meant, there are other Asian markets in town, definitely closer to campus, but none are as good or have as high quality of a meat as Lee Lee. Grab a cooler and make a trip up there.

Also - has anyone gone to G & L import? A friend just mentioned that to me as a possibility, but the yelp reviews seem kinda up and down...

I've been to every Asian market here in Tucson. G & L has a decent selection, but they only get fresh deliveries 2 times a week, which can be problematic if you need something fresh. They usually have most of the Asian herbs and vegetables, but their prices can be high and once again, it depends on the day.

As far as the meat goes, I would NOT get meat there. Everything has freezer burn and they do not have a fresh meat counter at all. I have frequently seen fresh noodles there that have clearly been improperly handled, and I do not think that they go through their stocks to remove items that have passed their expiration date.

So yeah, if you're in a pinch and can't make it up to Lee Lee and only need spices/sauces or vegetables, then go to G & L. For anything else, Lee Lee.

I highly recommend Grantstone Market on 8 W. Grant Rd. Closer to your areas than Lee Lee's and it is a Chinese specialty market whereas Lee Lee's in more international. Both are great. Prices are better at Grantstone. I haven't shopped for the peppercorns lately, but if u want roast duck, well then you'll have to go to Lee Lee's because there is a good Chinese deli attached, and it's the only one in town.
