Foiled by downtown road closures Sunday morning @09.00, ended up at T&T Cherry Street for groceries and congee--but couldn't stop there! While the main shop floor is just waking up, the hot food/dim sum area is humming, clouds of fragrant steam wafting irresistably through the store. A good variety of some 15/20 dim sum items are on offer along with congee.
--fried chive pancake, clearly a Chinese breakfast favourite: 20 cm, a pleasant chewy texture reminiscent of roti, redolent with fresh chives;
--the steamed shrimp dumplings (har gau), tender, even consistency and actually tasting of shrimp;
--fried pork dumplings: moist blend of seasoned minced pork, chive, onion, imperfectly folded into an appropriately chewy wrapper and lightly pan-fried, not greasy;
--lotus leaf w/glutinous rice: steamed to perfection, rice filling just sticky enough but not dry, flavourful and flecked generously with pork;
--congee: half porridge, half soup, this one is the real thing.
The bill was under $10.00. What a bargain! Obviously well known to the local Asian community, nearly every table in the seating area was full. All items are made and assembled on the spot in full view of customers from ingredients that are recogniseable. Selection is by pointing at items behind the glass counter, although most counter staff do speak English.
This is no elegant Sunday brunch, but a fresh, delicious [and affordable!] breakfast alternative. To avoid the charmless, often noisy plastic seating corner, all items are packed suitably for takeaway--enjoy in the comfort of your own home!
