I wanted to post about a place that's a new obsession of mine -- Troy Mezze in City Market in Downtown Raleigh. It's near Vic's in the place where a German restaurant used to be, and it is fantastic.
The food is Turkish, which is similar enough to other Mediterranean food to be familiar but seasoned differently enough from your usual Lebanese or Greek to be interesting.
I have been three times in the past two weeks (all for lunch), after hearing from someone who used to live in Istanbul that the food is very authentic.
First of all, anything made with dough there is just fantastic. They bring out a piece of flatbread and some dipping sauce when you sit down, and every time the bread has been slightly different but great. They also have Turkish pizzas with fantastic crust. Here's a picture I took last time I was there:
Not only is the crust great, but the toppings are excellent as well. The cheese blend is really tasty and all of the toppings I've had are good as well. The pizza in front is ground lamb, and the one in back is beef sausage. I also had the pizza with Turkish pastrami last time, and it was really great as well. The first time I went I had the doner wrap, which was also very good, but not as good as the pizza.
I'm posting about this place mainly because it has seemed a bit empty the few times I've been there. The location is not great in terms of walk ins, but the food is fantastic. I like it better than Sitti, and I am a huge fan of Sitti.
They're also open all day on Saturday and Sunday right now.
