The wife and I had to go to Charlotte to take care of some immigration business and, of course, to do a little eating in the process.
We tried the hound-recommended Taqueria Mexico on South Blvd., a grungy joint in a grungy neighborhood, but cheap, friendly, and good. Thanks to the Charlotte hounds for the recommendation!
We next stopped in at the Panaderia La Mexicana, just down the road. What is it with Mexican bakeries? I have the same experience time and again. The selection entices with all its bright colors and odd shapes, but the goods invariably turn out to be stale. In all my years I have yet to purchase a single non-stale item from a Mexican bakery. Very disappointing.
For dinner, we stopped at the Blue Mist Barbecue on Highway 64 near Asheboro. I'm surprised that the Blue Mist doesn't get more publicity on this board. It was very satisfactory all the way around: good cue, good pups, good slaw, appealing retro-diner feel, friendly service. I would certainly rank it higher than many a more renowned cue joint, to wit, Stameys, B's, Parkers, and Bullocks. Anyone passing on 64 should definitely make a point of stopping in.
