I recently visited San Francisco and ate at some chow-recommended places.
Yucatasia. Chicken with red mole was good but more comforting than flavorful. Real tortillas, though, and quite good watermelon juice.
Mount Everest. Very good dal, good but not great chicken. Authentic.
Ponzu. Coriander-crusted halibut was well-cooked but wasn't much fish or flavoring for $25. I read their famous dessert menu but it wasn't as interesting as the items that have been described here. I'll probably go back some day and try the dessert menu again.
Mittaphab. A very good place: pleasant decor, nice people, good food. Asked for real, spicy Lao food, the waiter directed me to the papaya salad and the chicken larb. Papaya salad was described (with wrinkled nose) as "strong", which it certainly was. A few bites are enough to get the idea, so you probably want to share it. Chicken larb was Flavor City with lots of interesting herbs.
