Trip Report: Picnic BBQ, A&S and Beasley's revisited

Arrived Sunday afternoon, wanted to give beasleys's chicken another try without the distraction of a waffle. When I finished I thought "hey, that was pretty good!" but then I recalled how I fought every fiber of my body from ordering a second full dinner at Price's in Charlotte. Still, move beasley's to NYC, charge $25 a plate
and people will line up day and night. I did love the biscuits and honey. Come to think of it, every biscuit I've had in raliegh/durham/chapel hill has been great, better than than anything I've had elsewhere.

Next night I drove out to Picnic. Ordered a pork plate with collard greens and mac and cheese. The pork was lean, slightly smokey, moist and delicious. Hard to understand how they get the pork so lean yet kept it so moist, would love to know their secret. Didn't love the east-west sauce but the sides were delicious. Unfortunately, the hush puppies were lukewarm and grainy.

Thought it would be fun to compare Picnic with A&S, drove out the next day for lunch. terribly disappointed, after two great meals last month, the pork was brown, over-smoked and tough. Looking at internet reviews, others have reported similar experiences. Thought about asking for another plate but, after some thought, decided it's worth overlooking an occasional mistake at a restaurant that cooks over wood, an imprecise science at best. Restaurants cooking q over wood need our support. Also, truth be told, I've not sent back a dish in 20 years.

My last night in town, I decided to give Picnic fried chicken a try. Ordered the combo plate, wow that's a LOT of food, a full plate of pork, a full order of fried chicken and two sides. They might be better served cutting portions in half and reducing the price a couple of dollars. The pork was great and the chicken, served with a sweet and spicy sauce, was fabulous. This time the hush puppies were freshly fried and good (but not as good as A&S). You all have an embarrassment of bbq riches.

Couple of quick notes, still haven't cracked the code on chinese food. Back to c&t for lunch, the mapo tofu was well spiced but soupy. Had the three cup chicken from tapei one night, better than avg but not great. On the way home from jfk I stopped at flushing's golden mall, http://newyork.seriouseats.com/2010/0... for some lamb/squash dumplings and a knock your socks off szechuan fish in hot sauce.

Looks like our client is hiring us to implement our recommendations, so I should have at least one or two more trips. and duke is still my daughter's top choice.

finally, on a completely unrelated note, if DRC is reading, we opened a 96 vega sicilia last night for my wife's bday. was good.

starting a diet today :)
