Thanks to all the chowhounders who answered my posts on where to eat during our recetnt trip to NYC.After going over the possiblities and the budgets of the couple we were meeting we ate at Campanile,Heidelberg, Montparnasseny,as well as casual at Michaels Cafe,Oxford cafe,Esses Bagels,Pax.We also had an excellent lunch at a very nice cafe at Grand Central Station in a spot on the east end balcony-Cipriani Dolci.
Campanile was just as we needed, a comfy Italian,didnt rush us,tables were spread out,service was excellent.There were 7 of us,and 5 of the 7 meals were excellent.ITwo of us had the bragiol special,but it was overcooked and very dry.From a culinary viewpoint,as a group Id give it a strong 7/10--but it was perfect for what we wanted as afar as ambience.
Heidelberg was incredible.I was going to order just the schweinhaxen,but the waiter said there was a schweinhaxen platter which included the same schweinhaxen, but also had smoked pork,and bratwurst,plus red cabbage and spaetzle that 2 could eat.Ive had schweinhaxen many time in Germany (Munich),and this was as good or better --i couldnt believe it.The meat must have come froma 300lb pig it was so large,and slow cooked,with a very crispy outside--the meat just fell off the bone.The other couple had some wursts,and they were also excellent.It was Octoberfest,so very festive---higly recommened.The platter could realy serve 3 people,and was $29!!
we had pre-show meal at montparnasseny on 51st.The prix fixe meal was $25 and included several choices--we chose the duck terrine,with coq au vin,and creme brulee.The chicken was perfectly cooked,sauce was excellnt,and the dessert was perfect.the other couple had salmon which was aslo perfect.Service was smooth,were there at 5:30 and left at 7,plenty of time to get to Broadway ( we took E train which took 10 minutes from 53rd and 3rd).House wine was very good.
Again, thanks for all the help--the other folks asked us how we knew all these reat places,and we gave Chowhound credit.
PS, we also took a luncheon cruise on the Spirit out of Pier 62.(the Bateaux has better food bbut wasnt sailing Sunday).It was avery funexperience,and the food was very good--bob
