Trip report from July and suggestions for December

MusicSue1 | Oct 16, 201812:08 PM     10

Hi everyone - realized that before I asked anything about my upcoming trip, I should thank all those who offered advice for my last. I did 2 nights in Chinatown at the end of July after 2 weeks solo in Italy, including a one week cooking school in Tuscany. Clearly I was suffering from pasta fatigue but had some great meals.

I was looking for a great tasting menu near the hotel that wouldn't kill me with a cancellation fee if my plane was delayed - Dirt Candy was suggested and it did not disappoint, even if I had trouble fully enjoying it. Problem 1 - I was starving upon arrival to the city, so had a hotel picnic of dumplings, egg rolls, and squid balls from East Dumpling House (the most ghetto place I've ever gotten food from, but so good and cheap). Problem 2 - didn't consider that I would be on Rome time and it would feel like I was eating at 2 am. I got the big tasting menu, and the food was fantastic, so imaginative and great big flavors. I finally threw in the towel at the cauliflower course, just couldn't eat another bite or I would be sick or literally explode. I will be back...

Day 2, the perfect food day. Bacon, egg and cheese with mayo on a roll, perfect American breakfast. Lunch at Sushi Nakazawa - best sushi ever, amazing flavors, great sakes they chose for me, so fresh, just flawless. Then Levain Bakery for a cookie and milk enjoyed in Central Park, pre-theater snack of wine and cheese at Casselula, and post-theater noodles with pork and crab from Pure Thai Cookhouse (thanks Ziggy!). Add to that 2 Doughnut Plant donuts before leaving and Kossar's bagels to go (not that big on bialys) and my perfect food vacation was complete.

Now the new scenario - 3 nights solo after Christmas/before New Years, staying on the LES. Decisions I could use the experts help on - Jungsik or Atomix? Love tasting menus, heard these mentioned lately, preferences? Then, one night I want to do small plate hopping in the neighborhood, LES or East Village. Have Baar Baar on my radar, maybe Wildair, others? Then, anyone done lunch tasting at Ko lately? Loved my meal at the old location many years ago, thinking about trying the new.

Thanks in advance!
