Trip Report what we did, where we ate and so on...

Every year we go to Vegas and we pick one night to go to a VERY nice place and have a meal without looking at the prices on the menu. This is the first time we went over a weekend and didn’t plan ahead very well, so this is how our trip went:

Thursday: Arrived in Vegas and rented a car, Went to Wal-Mart, got some snacks, drinks, water, sundries, etc. It was nearly 4 when we left and my husband I were STARVED.

We contemplated checking in and hitting up the Rendezvous Concierge lounge at the Paris hotel/casino where we stayed, for a cocktail and whatever they were serving, but instead opted to start out our vacation the right way and we drove over to Firefly on Paradise.
In addition to some Red Sangria, we ate:
Boquerónes (White sardines) which are marinated and served with yellow pepper verjus on a nice piece of toasty crusty bread and topped with just a touch of basil and a slice of roasted red pepper.
Stuffed Dates: dates stuffed with a Spanish almond, wrapped in bacon and served with a red wine reduction and a little chevre on top… WOW
Chorizo clams, which were VERY good
Mussels in a coconut curry sauce… meh

Most everything was fantastic, I think I liked the mussels the least, as the sauce tasted sweet but in a Campbell’s Tomato Soup kind of way…

We do love Firefly and hit that place up every trip.

Happily sated and refreshed from the sangria, we drove back to Paris and checked into our room.
We were on the 18th floor, overlooking the pool with a decent view of the Bellagio fountain (partially obstructed, but not bad)

We unpacked, put away the snacks and drinks (by the way, they cleared out the minibar and you can use the fridge for free…BONUS) and chilled in the room contemplating our next move… which turned out to be a short nap and then a shower to freshen up.
Nighttime activity was basically just strolling around from place to place taking it all in, having a cocktail here and there

Day two Friday, breakfast at the concierge lounge the smoked salmon is wonderful, and the fruit fresh and ripe. Coffee is out of a machine contraption but not bad… not great, but not bad

Went to Madame Tusseau’s and then walked about the Venetian and decided on lunch at Zefferino’s.
Had blue point oysters for an appetizer, a glass of a good crisp Chablis The oysters were fresh and sweet with a nice briny finish.

For lunch, I had a crab and shrimp risotto that was out of this world just a bit of tomato. It was perfectly cooked rice and the consistency was right on. (not overly soupy but not like paste either)

My hubby had agnoletti type pasta stuffed with veal in a pomodoro sauce which was equally as good.

The bread they put on the table is WONDERFUL, lightly toasted and brushed with olive oil… crisp crust with a nice chew and the crumb is light and airy, but not “soft” or pillowy… just perfect.

We were totally unprepared by the way, for the place being dressy. We were in shorts and Phillies T-shirts and sneakers. We thought we were joining people sitting “outside” eating pizza. They sat us upstairs overlooking the canal and their “out door” dining area. They seemed unfazed by our appearance, so we just rolled with it. The service is excellent, the food excellent. I’d give this place 5 out of 5 stars.

Day 3 Saturday Daytime we visited some of the other casinos and then hung at the pool. We had a late lunch / early dinner at Café ile St.Louis at Paris… (see my thread in General Chowhounding conversation about the crepes) my meal was “ok” my husbands was “good” I would not rave about either of them and we probably won’t go back there for anything more than a cup of coffee.

Day 4: Sunday did the champagne brunch buffet at Paris. Please don’t judge! I had sushi and crab legs with champagne for brunch… I said don’t judge… Sushi is my hangover cure.

The rolls on the buffet at Paris are… well passable. Better than the quick fix I sometimes grab at the grocery store, and just what the doctor ordered.

Hubby had traditional breakfast fare, eggs, sausage, etc. his was very good. The buffet at the Paris is hit and miss for food, but then from what I hear, most buffets in Las Vegas are mostly “misses”.
(we went to Fremont Street and I hit a progressive on a slot machine… thrill of a lifetime)

Sunday night… still buzzing from the win, we took our buy one get one free entrée coupon (oh, yes I did, and yes, even after a big win) to Hash House a go-go and we both ordered
chicken and waffles.

We should have split one order because it was so big. It’s delicious…the waffles have bacon in them, they top it with fried leeks and a maple syrup reduction, the chicken has fresh sage in the coating. It’s stacked high (ok, a little 80’s throw-back-ish “tall food) and they stick a big branch of rosemary down the middle.

Monday, last day in Vegas… 3:30 flight. We had breakfast in the lounge, checked out, loaded up the car and got back inside Paris to kill time. Checked out the new Sugar Factory at Paris… all hype. (I love my daughter, but I’m not buying her a crystal studded ‘couture’ lollipop holder for $30 and refill lollipops at 3 for $12. To be fair, the menu looked interesting and they did have some really nice looking cup cakes, but we’d been eating and drinking so much we decided that since it was our last day, we’d give our calorie intake a break. Flight out was ON TIME and we got back to Philly a half hour sooner than planned.

All in all, it was a very good trip, but in the future if we go over a weekend, we’ll be sure to plan better for Charlie Palmer or Aureole, or maybe even back to Bradley Ogden (if we can get back there before BO is closed)
