Trip Report, 4/19 – 4/25/08

My hubby and I (our 32nd trip since October 2001) plus his parents (their first time) and my Mom (she has been about eight times) were in New Orleans beginning on Saturday, April 19th through Friday, April 25th.

Drago’s (Metairie location). Went to Drago’s straight from the airport so my in-laws could experience the charbroiled oysters. They thought they were divine. My mother-in-law started out with ½ dozen and then went and ordered another dozen.

Besh’s Steakhouse. We go to Besh’s Steakhouse as we use our food coupons we get from Harrah’s. No one was really that impressed with this place. It was just okay.

Commander’s for brunch. Everyone loved everything they had. Service was top notch for as busy as they are. I cannot list everyone’s appetizers, etc., but they were licking their plates. In-laws would definitely go back.

K-Paul’s – They sat the five of us at the chef’s table. Everyone enjoyed everything and my in-laws said they would return here. Service was top notch.

Palace Café – Hubby and I just went for appetizers at the bar one afternoon. Crabmeat cheesecake and oyster loaf (new dish on the menu) was out of this world.

Napoleon House – Hubby and I went for lunch and sat in the courtyard. He got rice and beans which he said was good. I got the Greek salad which was good, very nice dressing on it. We split a muffaletta which we both enjoyed.

Irene’s – My in-laws felt this was the best meal of the whole trip. Everything was exceptional for everyone, veal marsala, pompano with menuinere sauce, filet migon with gruyere and blue cheese, and chicken rosemarino. I don’t remember everyone’s appetizers except my hubby got the oyster soup special which was heavenly. We all got the Creole cheesecake. Best cheesecake around as far as I am concerned. Service was a bit off as the boys had the night off to go to some play. We go to Irene’s every trip to NO and have never had a problem with service except for this time.

August – This was our fourth visit here. We were all disappointed. First, the service was not good. I ordered the monkfish special and had to send it back. It had such a fishy taste and smell. The appetizer gnocchi were wonderful as always. Others got the trout special which they said was good but the portion size was for an infant. My mother-in-law ordered a glass of house wine which was 1/3 of a pour and the cost was $22 for the glass. My father-in-law brought that to the attention of the waiter and the waiter returned an attitude. They bought dessert for the whole table. My hubby and I will be back in August and we really don’t think we will be visiting this restaurant again until I start reading some good reviews again. My in-laws would never go back they said.

Bacco – We went for a late lunch. Everyone loved what they ordered. Lobster ravioli were better than I remembered. Shrimp Bacco excellent. Crawfish ravioli good. Appetizers all good. Service was a bit off as they said they were short of help. In-laws would return.

Central Grocery – Purchased muffalettas to take home. We ate ½ on the plane and I can honestly say we liked Napoleon House’s better. Too much oil on Central’s. It is now Monday, the 28th, and we still haven’t eaten the other one and ½ we have left.

Hubig Pies – Purchased six of them to take home from Rouse’s. All good but coconut is our favorite.

All in all, it was a wonderful trip and my hubby and I will be back in our favorite city on August 16th.

110 days and counting!!!!
