Just back from 3 days in Savannah, and wanted to report back on the food, in the spirit of giving back to those that steered us well in the first place. BTW we stayed at the Marshall House and loved it.
Here's where we ate:
- Sandfly BBQ (we went to the steamliner location - twice!):
Scrumptious pulled chicken and brisket. Excellent coleslaw, mac n' cheese, and potato salad. We wanted to sample the coconut cake (the only dessert) but they were sold out both times. It's worth heading there early, since they only stay open until the food runs out:
- B's Cracklin; BBQ
Excellent brisket, chicken was OK, mac n cheese was delicious. Wonderful banana pudding. Their specialty is heritage pork. Their hours were different than what was posted online, so worth double checking.
- Sweet Potatoes (soul food)
A true hole-in-the-wall (strip mall location, odd decor). Exquisite fried chicken (but only served twice a week - most of the time their specialty is peach-glazed chicken). A very varied menu, sides were just OK. Banana pudding is renowned but I found it overly sweet.

- Back in the Day Bakery
Amazing (hipster-y) bakery. We had fantastic egg sandwiches (served on homemade biscuits).
- Flying Monk Noodle Bar
We wanted a break up all the rich Southern fare, so tried this Asian fusion noodle spot. The green bean side was amazing, though both of our entrees were underseasoned. Other diners' food looked really delicious, though, so I wonder if we ordered the wrong thing and should have been more adventurous.
- Leopold's ice cream
The ice cream was tasty and the service very friendly and earnest - but we didn't find it worth the long line or the hype.
We loved Savannah! Highly recommend it as a destination for a getaway!
