Trip Report - 10 days in San Diego

Earlier this month, we visited San Diego for the first time for a friend's wedding in the hills of Ramona followed by a week of vacation. Here’s our trip report, organized by general area. Hope this helps future travelers!

We’re looking forward to returning. And when we do, will absolutely be going back for Donut Bar, Whiskey House, Humberto’s, Underbelly, iDessert, Rebecca’s, and of course all of your amazing farmers’ markets!

Downtown:
-Donut bar: cappuccino was pretty good; lemon-blueberry donut was good; girl scout cookie donut tasted just like Tagalongs and was pretty good; Monte Cristo (fried donut bread with ham and jam inside) was amazing; Strawberry cream donut (fresh cream and strawberries inside of a fluffy donut split in two) was amazing; Strawberry cheesecake donut was okay; chocolate donut was okay
-Whiskey House: nice lounge atmosphere; friendly bartenders; good cocktails, although I found the “Come to Jesus” cocktail to be a bit flat

Ocean Beach:
-Azucar: good meat pastries; great mango cheesecake; good guava jam pastry
-Point Loma Seafoods: okay fried fish taco
Mission Beach:
-Latin Café: okay but disappointing lunch buffet
-Best Bakery: good banana-blueberry muffin; bad cinnamon roll
-Juice Kaboose: good berry juice; great tropical fruit juice
-Olive Bakery: good latte; great raspberry jam coffee cake; great wedding cookies; okay iced mocha
-La Playa Taco Shop: great carnitas taco; good carne asada burrito; good shrimp taco; great fish taco

Old Town general area:
-Rose Donuts: pretty good orange and lemon donuts; okay chocolate
-J&T Thai Street Food: pretty good salad with fried tofu; amazing chicken lettuce wraps

La Jolla:
-Farmers market: fresh oysters were okay; watermelon-basil lemonade and Belgian waffle with cookie spread and whipped cream was great; fish taco was good; carnitas tacos from La Cocina were amazing
-Don Carlos taco: Clairemont burrito was great; Supreme (carnitas) burrito was okay, but a bit dry; horchata was way too sweet
-La Jolla Brewery: Hibiscus raspberry was gross (tasted like Bud Light with raspberries in it); Killer IIPA was pretty good; Brown ale was okay

Little Italy:
-Underbelly: great ramen (their main one, belly of the beast?); okay buns (albacore and brisket); amazing sushi salad
-iDessert: really cool concept; found the chocolate and caramel flavors to be a bit heavy, but loved the fruit- and nut-based ones; favorite combination was pistachio merengue shell filled with coconut gelato, lemon cake, fresh strawberries, and berry sauce.
-Sculpin brewpub: Nice atmosphere; really packed; mainstays were our favorites (Sculpin IPA)
-Farmers’ market: fresh uni (sea urchin) was delicious; pork crepe from the guy with the line was delicious too; amazing beef and chicken bulgogi from Korean food stand; amazing cookies from the Cravory (especially the thyme-rosemary one)

Golden Hill/South Park:
-Pachitas bakery: Great ginger cookie shaped like a pig (anyone know what these are called; they’re my favorite Mexican treat); good bolillos; good sweets in general
-Humberto’s Tacos: Good California burrito; great carnitas taco; great guacamole; good carne asada taco; good adobada taco
-Rebecca’s: Good banana oat scone with amazing fresh strawberry jam; great drip coffee (Africa blend); good café au lait; great lemon-glazed shortbread
-Eclipse Chocolate: Good cupcake with merengue, blackberry, and crème fraiche
