First trip to Claro's - Brief Report

RSMBob | Jan 23, 2006 12:02 AM

After my post below asking for italian sausage recs, I made my virgin visit to Claro's on Saturday (Tustin location), albeit not without incident. I headed out with my 2 young kids (2 and 6) for a culinary shopping adventure...only to have my car break down on the way there! So, I'm on the 5 just past the El Toro Y and am able to pull over to a call box...which doesn't work! That'll teach me to give Mrs RSMBob the cell phone! After 45 min I flag down a passing motorist and use their cell phone to call my wife and AAA. After that I decided, what the heck, let's try the car again...wouldn't you know it works! So I pull off at the exit and wait for Mrs to come by and pick up the kids. Ok, so the car works...heck yes I'm continuing my journey!

That being said, I made it Claro's about 2 hours late...what a wonderful mess of a store it is! Unassuming, crowded, disorganized...but great stuff! Deli on one side and bakery/register on the other with food and other items in between. Picked up 10 lbs of italian sausage (wonderful and well priced at $2/lb), some Escalon 6-in-1 ground tomatoes, a loaf of sourdough bread (kinda pricey but very good, some odds and ends, and the best deal, 2 large bags of fresh pizza dough @ 69 cents/lb! After making it home, I made 3 deep dish homemade pizzas for family dinner/move night that were among the best I've ever made!

The deli and bakery deserve further study, so I will be a semi-regular there! What a great find!
