Another Trip Blog

Just home from some weeks of travel and eating around Mexico and would like to share some of my personal bests of the trip. In a couple of cases I can't be really specific as to location because I don't remember.

Best Fish:

Pescado a la Veracruzana name escapes bit on the waterfront by the navy ship (not on it) in Boca del Rio Veracruz. Yes that dish is served in a 1000 places around the country but that took it to a new level. Runner up is a place called Pascal in Puerto Escondido...not really Mexican in style but run by a sure hand at the grill with all that great fish brought off the boats every morning!. Also a great, great feed of ostiones empanizada in a beach palapa Playa Roca Blanca Oaxaca

Best Frijoles

La Hacienda on Avenida Oaxaca Puerto Escondido. Ok it was not just the frijoles but everything they served us there was stellar..enfrijoladas, carne asada, bistec mexicana , super tortillas a mano from the clay comal, tlayudas and an amazing looking commida corrida that we missed. All that plus good service from a family just moved in from Mexico City. $10-12 a person and you are filled, tipped out and had a couple of beers, find that in North America anywhere!

Best Classy Joint

Hostal de las Brisas off the far west end of Avenida Juarez in Puebla. Lots of upscale places in the zone and some of them are excellent but this one stands out to me. Speciality is spit roasted cabrito, done to perfection need I say more? Ok maybe, wonderful array of house salsas, wide variety of beef and pork cuts, super attentive and pro service. Prices are higher than usual for Mexico but I could not eat another bite and my quarter cabrito entree was $16.

Are everywhere but they are different and better than in your standard US sub joint. FYI there is a good torta stand in the DF airport in the walkway to the long distance bus ramp. Best torta of the trip was in a fonda outside the Xalapa bus station, Torta Hawaianesa.

Best Enchiladas

Had a few great plates of enchiladas but outstanding was in Benito Juarez Mercado in Oaxaca. If you walk in through the hall full of carne asada stands and can actually resist stopping there, thenturn left as you exit into the main market and it is the second fonda on the left. Enchiladas en Mole Rojo.

Best Burger

Outdoor stand in Colonia Roma corner of Morelia and Colima just off Alvaro Obregon and near Hotel Stanza (excellent hotel). Also in the area some excellent English style draft beer at a pool hall corner of Orizaba and Tabasco. The whole Condesa/Roma area was new to me and filled with great places to eat
