MORE on my Q trip to Austin...

Joule Thomson | Nov 12, 2003 11:09 PM

First let me say I am sorry to drag this out but I really have not had the time but anyway....

As I said I LOVED Austin and of course now the best part THE Q.

I went to Lochart the first day because I was just shaking with anticipation. I have to say it really is, flat out, one of the prettiest little towns I have ever seen....and finding the Q was NO problem at all.

The first place I went to was Kreuz because it popped up first on the way into town.

WHat a beautiful building they are in. I stood in a long line but did not mind waiting becuase I was soaking up the smoke and the general environment.
When my turn came I ordered a link some brisket and a slice of their smoked prime rib and 2 ribs.

I returned to the car and marked the brown paper bag with a K.

I then went to Blacks...a very friendly place that at 11am had no line at all. The counterman cut me what looked like 2 perfect slices of brisket and again I got a link and 2 ribs.

Once again I returned to the car with the identical brown paper bag and marked it with a B.

Next was Smitty and I repeated the process only I got their prime rib which was cheaper than Kruez.. along with the links and brisket.

Again marked the brown paper bag with an S and put it back in the car.

From there I went down the road to Luling and got ribs only and a links because the brisket looked SO dry I just was not at all interested.

After marking the bag I went back to the hotel.

Now I spread out ALL my booty on the table marked it and prepared for the tasting.

Hahah this was really the moment of truth. Not a finer feast could be set before anyone. I took a deep breath and dove in.

I have to say that FLAT OUT the BEST Brisket of the lot of them was BLACKS by a country mile !
It was tender and moist and packed to the ass with smoke flavor not too much just enough. I had to fight myself NOT to eat more than one or 2 bites.
Not only did Blacks have the best brisket to my taste..they had the best links too. Course and smokey meat with a nice balance of spice. Food of the Gods.

Kruez was almost as good but did not have near the flavor in either the brisket or the links...the prime rib however...was OUT of this world fabulous... If They were the only Q joint in town I would not complain....BUT...NO competition for Blacks.

Smitty was next and the brisket was not bad and the links were OK too again after tasting Blacks everything paled in comparison. The prime rib was also OK....not as good as Kruez. And I will say the same about Smitty if he were the only game in town... I would not complain.

Luling was last and it was a big dissapointment. The ribs were just fair and the links were waaay too salty maybe it was an off day but this is the reason I did not sit down to eat a meal at any one of these places because I was not sure what to expect.

But BLACKS ahhhh BLACKS !!!!!
Now THERE is a reason to move to Austin.

All of the places had ribs that were just OK. again Blacks was the best of the lot.
I say this about the ribs from ALL the places because I am VERY VERY picky about ribs and it takes some STELLAR ribs to make my taste buds sing.

Blacks is the best of the best and my choice for the best Q joint in the world.

I have heard that they mail order so now I don't ever have to be without the best brisket on the planet.

Thank you to all who helped me with this trip. I have more to report but as usual I have no more time.
Thanks again it would not have been nearly as enjoyable without your input.
