Trinbago Caribbean Restaurant – Albany

Yesterday I made a mid-afternoon snack stop at Trinbago Caribbean on Madison Avenue. The place is new and is located at the bottom of Madison Avenue, next to Lombardo’s. It is very small, with only about a half dozen tables. When I walked in I received a smiling, friendly welcome. Only wanting a snack, I requested one order of “Doubles” and one Sorrel Drink to go. I’ve never had Caribbean food before so I have no basis for comparison, but I was very happy with what I received at Trinbago. The pair of Doubles were fluffy, yellowish fried dough ovals that were so wonderfully not-greasy I kept wondering whether they were actually fried. On top of the dough was a mixture of chick peas and a thick, fruity sweet and spicy sauce -- reminded me of a spicy chutney. I enjoyed them very much and they made a perfect snack. The Sorrel Drink was the perfect refresher to go with the spicy Doubles. It was a deep red beverage that was spicy, sour and lightly sweet all at the same time. I could detect clove, cinnamon, and lemon in it. Very unusual.

They have a full menu of lunch and dinner meals which I will sample when I can bring the family with me. A woman at the counter (possibly the owner?) proudly explained that they would soon be adding breakfast service too.
