Trifecta Mexican Food crawl in PG County

Steve | May 27, 201905:48 PM     11

I hit three standout Mexican places in PG County that truly showcase the best in Mexican food that the DC area has to offer. I felt privileged to visit these places. But I also realize just how far DC and Virginia has to catch up with Maryland.

First up was El Mexicano on Riggs Rd. Although this is called a taqueria, the main item to get here is the pollo mole poblano (I've had this before) with its rich and complex sauce. A new item for me was maybe even better, a pork adobe rojo which was listed as a special on a small whiteboard standing on the counter. Again, the sauce was so thick and complex, it is an astounding dish. Pour that gravy down my throat please. Food does not get better than this.

I stopped by La Fondita in Hyattsville for a pound of lamb barbacoa to go. It's served in a plastic bag, and when I opened the bag for a taste, the aroma could have knocked me over. The flavor and wetness of the lamb was off the charts. You know that stuff they claim is barbacoa elsewhere? Hah! What a joke...

I then stopped by La Placita a couple of minutes away for a taco al pastor. This really is a taqueria, with about twenty different taco fillings. The meat for the al pastor is dripping with juiciness and spices on the spit, and watching them carve it is an outrageous vision of beauty. This is the meat to get. Although I've had this before, isn't it so nice when a fond memory can be topped by an even greater experience the next time? Oh yeah, this was it.
