Trifecta of creatively named restaurants on South Street

OK, these places really have nothing to do with each other, but writing a post for each one felt a little anemic, so together they go.

Supper (http://supperphilly.com/) - I had brunch here. :) I was a little disappointed, though; the menu changes "daily" so the three peach croissant bread pudding (or whatever) that I had spied on the menu posted in the window was not available. Not the restaurant's fault. Moving on to what I had, part of this is me ordering new things that didn't live up to my hopes for them, but brunch was not particularly good. The frittata with chorizo and some manner of cheese came in a lodge cast iron skillet with home fries on top. The potatoes weren't particularly seasoned, and the ingredients in the frittata weren't well-distributed; for a few bites I'd wondered if they forgot there was supposed to be something there besides the egg. I haven't eaten enough frittatas to say if the texture were correct, so I'll just leave it there. I also ordered the house-made pork scrapple, never having had scrapple before. It seemed like it should be a high-quality product and low-commitment (vs. buying a package to cook). Hm... the outside was nicely crispy but the inside had... no resistance or real texture to it. My friend informed me it was supposed to be "creamy" on the inside, so I suppose it was correct. It tasted a little sausage-y. I didn't like this texture for an ostensible meat product (likewise in Japan their gyoza fillings are also too mushy). My friend told me that this means I'm not a true Pennsylvanian--well, it is what it is. I also got a dessert. I think it was the cake du jour, which turned out to be a chocolate ganache tart. It was quite big, so worthwhile, but it was pretty one-note in flavor/texture so I didn't like it that much. XD;; Also, it was just... hard, rather than decadent.

Entree BYOB (http://entreebyob.com/) - they do have appetizers and desserts. :) I came here on a snowy snowy day... yelp indicates that this place can get very crowded and I can see how that could be. I had the lobster tail (tempura?) with mango sauce and the brick chicken. Firstly, the cooking was well-done in the sense that the frying was nice and crispy and the meat was tender and moist. But the salt level was ridiculous and was embedded into the breading. The lobster came with a spicy mango sauce and some kind of mayo, so there was no respite. The brick chicken pan gravy was also... a challenge. So overall it's hard to recommend. The chicken is also half a cornish hen, whereas you can get a whole cornish hen prepared similarly (pan-fried while being pressed) for $12 at Oasis Restaurant (http://www.oasisrestaurantphila.com/) in Bustleton, which is about half the price of Entree's entree. (Similarly at that restaurant, you can get 2 quails for $11, also about half the price you'd pay for 1 quail at High Street. Sigh.) OTOH, the creme brulee was delicious. It is served in a deeper dish so that affects the ratio of caramelized sugar to creme brulee, but I liked being able to really get my spoon into it. The service was also nice. 2 staff (1 waitperson and 1 kitchen staff) seemed to be holding down the fort that day and gave no sign of being annoyed to not get a snow day (since I had a reservation they called to confirm and I asked if it would really be alright. They said if I and another party were going to come they would be open, so I'm glad they also got a walk-in while I was there).

Indian Restaurant (http://indianrestaurantphiladelphia.com/) - well, it is certainly an Indian restaurant. They are not... the same type of Indian restaurant as Bindi (rip)/Tashan/Indeblue, but they also don't have a buffet, either. I've actually only had takeout from here, though. The first time was a while ago, so I can only say that I didn't think the lamb biryani was good. This time I got the crabmeat curry because I wanted to try something new and not just get mattar paneer/chicken tikka masala. I inquired and the crabmeat comes from a can. It is in a pretty shredded state and I don't think it is well-served by being in a curry. However, I find the actual flavor of the curry to be quite good, which I think bodes well for their curries with other proteins. BTW, I got it medium spicy, which I found to be pleasant. (I am not a complete spice wimp but I'm not very interested in challenging myself either--like, I've eaten the hot chicken at The Fat Ham... I finished it, but it felt more like punishment than gustatory pleasure. >.> )
