TriBeCa Grill restaurant week dinner report

We enjoyed our dinner last night at TriBeCa Grill. I'd never been there before, but they're extending their prixe fixe dinners past Rest. Week (albeit raised to the still-reasonable $33). Incidentally, although the restaurant seemed to be hopping when we arrived (at 7:00), I noticed that two businessmen who didn't have reservations were able to get a table immediately.

The Restaurant Week choices (two each of appetizers, main courses and desserts) were right on the regular menu, so you didn't have to ask for a special menu, and I certainly didn't feel like I was treated differently by the servers, who were very attentive and friendly.

For starters, I had a squash soup with two chestnut ravioli floated in it. THis was the best part of the meal-- the soup was thinner than I expected, but very rich and well-seasoned. And the ravioli were luscious. My companion had a very ordinary salad with scallops and chickpeas.

We both opted for the cod for our main course, which came with lemon gnocchi and some more of the chestnut cream that filled the ravioli in my soup (I could probably slurp up a whole bowl of that stuff!). The cod itself was nicely seasoned on the outside, but I think it was either a little underdone, or it had been frozen, because the texture once you reached the middle of the fillet was a little strange. But the gnocchi was delicious, with an unexpected tartness, and a firm bite. (The other option was lamb shank on a bed of polenta.)

Dessert was a little chocolate mousse-filled cake piled high with crackly strands of pulled sugar, beautifully presented on a plate that had been daubed with colorful polka dots of chocolate and raspberry syrup. My friend had the apple tart with tart green-apple sorbet.

The wine-by-the-glass list was reasonable-- plenty of choices for $8 and up. And our coffees were $3.

All in all, an enjoyable meal.
