Triangle: Ma Ma Wok and La Farm Bakery

I tried the dim sum at Ma Ma Wok in Cary this weekend. Everything was heavy and greasy -- easily inferior to the dim sum offered at Neo-China and Hong Kong Restaurant. Dim sum aside, Ma Ma wok offers a large and authentic Chinese menu (as distinct from its American-style menu). I've been once for dinner, but I was not impressed. We may have have on our hands an oddity: a restaurant that is at once thoroughly authentic and thoroughly mediocre. Then again, I don't want to write the place off too quickly given its interesting menu. Perhaps I merely ordered the wrong two dishes. Has anyone else been?

After breakfast we stopped at La Farm Bakery, which is right across the street. This is the Cary version of Gugelhopf. It's a pleasant little nook, but not in the same league as Gugelhopf in terms of either bread or pastry. We had an excellent chocolate macaroon cookie and a mediocre peach tart, and we sampled some of their good but not spectacular breads. La Farm is featured in the excellent book "Artisan Baking Across America" by Maggie Glezer, by the way.
