Tri-Tip Burrito @ Roadhouse BBQ & Grill, Salinas Valley Truck Stop

Melanie Wong | Sep 10, 201607:07 PM

Hearing raves for the tri-tip burrito ($6.99 large), how could I not try it out? The well-used grill rig in the parking lot boosted my confidence that the tri-tip could be decent.

Before ordering, I watched a plate of tri-tip tacos being assembled. The counter lady weighed out a quantity of pre-sliced, not-rare, tri-tip from the warming tray, sliced it into strips and then added to the tortillas. Looked good to me, so I ordered the burrito. Well, a different lady made mine and just dumped the cross-grain slices of tri-tip on the mound of rice and beans on the tortilla without further cutting. Then cheese, and wrapped up in a foil cylinder.

Luckily, the plentiful tri-tip was very tender and not dried out, so easy to bite through. This was quite a fully packed burrito but a bit simple. The red salsa added needed kick of more than medium-hot spice and roasted flavors. The meat was well-seasoned but did not have much grill influence. I might like this better in a sandwich with some garnishes instead.

I also tried a grilled chicken leg quarter, $2.75, that was grilled well but plain tasting. It needed the salsa to perk it up.

Best item was the fresh strawberries and cream ($3.45 small). The heavy, fresh whipped cream was heavenly, if a bit too sweet, but the better to balance out the berries.

All in all, above average quality food and a lot of it for the price. Tri-tip can be purchased by the whole roast as well here.
