tres agaves salsa

So I went to tres agaves last night for a welcome-back-to-bay-area party for a friend and had some delicious carnitas. But there was one interesting thing unrelated to the carnitas. When I tried the thicker, spicier of the two salsas that come with the complimentary chips, it tasted very familiar, but not mexican-familiar. I am of south indian ancestry and so was another person in our party. I asked him to try the salsa and tell me what it tasted like to him. He thought the same thing I did: rasam! Honest to god, it tasted like concentrated, chilled rasam. Has anyone else noticed this?
