Treasure Island - Tammy's Chicken In Waffles

The Bay Bridge bike path opened all the way from Oakland to Treasure Island today. I did not anticipate a Chowhound post from the ride but as I rode onto the flats of Yerba Buena, there was a converted shipping container (1/2 of one, actually) labeled as Tammy's Chicken In Waffles (note the preposition rather than a conjunction).

I'm a big fan of chicken 'n waffles, that historic dish of fried chicken served on top of waffles. I used to go to Roscoe's in LA when I lived there in the '80s, typically going after midnight once the clubs closed. But Tammy's said "in" not "and", so I stopped by to see what was cooking. Given the limitations of the small kitchen, Tammy puts chicken into the waffle batter. I chose the "Mouthful", which included chicken, bacon, and cheddar. Wow, it was good! It's a thick waffle, sort of Belgian style. It comes out very crisp on the outside, and Tammy provides butter and syrup for the topping. She also gives you a knife and fork, but the waffle had enough integrity that I ate it like a slice of pizza. The salty, smoky bacon, meaty chicken, and melting cheddar combined with the crispy waffle, melting butter, and sweet syrup to make a synergistic whole that was very satisfying. Plus, eating outside on TI on a pleasant day adds to the experience. If you're out on the island and feeling peckish, Tammy's is the place to go.
