just started a job in deep brooklyn and was looking forward to the experiential of my newfound chowhounding proximity. haven't explored much yet, but today was sent into rapturous stupor by a fishmonger/asian market on 86th, off 18th ave. i've yet to sample the fish, but it was almost a small city block of cases, some so fresh they were in tanks and looking quite frisky in their last moments, i kid you not. also cheap (beautiful looking sea scallops, 599/lb. 5 different cuts of salmon; 5 varieties of live crabs); also efficient, was in and out in 10 minutes; also with huge range of asian and vegetarian fresh, canned, and frozen treats. i cannot wait to indulge my piscean preoccupation later in the week.
on a related sad note: bensonhurst is a hard place to find a good tuna salad. carrots are ubiquitous. but i havent given up. if anyone has good takeout or lunch tips for this area, pls forward.
