Trattoria Pizzeria da Luigi, Royal Oak [DTW]

Just a quick post regarding the closure of Antica Pizzeria Fellini. It has been bought out by the now wealthy businessman who used to own the old Sangria Restaurant (sold to an investor group and being re-invented), and he renamed Antica "Trattoria Pizzeria da Luigi." The interior has been significantly upgraded, and it now has a nice little bar with a TV (granted, I preferred the BYOB of the old place).

The menu has more entrees and they sound very impressive. . The pizza is very similar to before, but I would say it has taken a small step backwards (maybe just missing the old owner's personal touch). Beautiful wood burning oven.

I tried the daily special of eggplant parmesan. The quality was good. Fresh eggplant, carefully assembled with a homemade marinara on top. When I went to Eastside Mario's I was insulted by the quality of the eggplant parmesan. At Trattoria Pizzeria da Luigi I was happy with the quality, though I was surprised by the truly miniscule portion-- LESS than 3" x 3" x 1.5" (yes, I did measure...and I did say LESS), with zero accompaniments. Nada. I thought I was on an episode of Carol Burnett, spoofing the small portions of a "continental cuisine" restaurant.

Anyway, while this particular portion was teenie, the price was decent ($8). So, if you can afford to order three courses, then you should leave with a very good feeling in your mouth and tummy. As long as someone knows this info going in, I think a person will be happy eating here. Happier than after eating at the old Sangria, which I thought was always disappointing. Maybe I was judging Sangria against my good experiences in Spain, while I judge an Italian resto against other AMERICAN-Italian restos, which would be unfair?
