Trattoria Firenze report (San Diego)

No, not Firenze Trattoria.

This is a little Italian place in Clairemont, in the Henry's shopping center on Genesee. It used to be kind of a run-down pizza joint, but has been remade into a very pleasant space.

Constantinos, the chef, is young and creative, and while the menu has some standard Italian items like lasagna and chicken parmigiana, there are also items like gnocchi with gorgonzola and cherries. There is a special pizza menu, of traditional Italian-style pizzas, as well.

Went there tonight and had a really delicious special. Chicken breast wrapped in prosciutto, served atop asparagus and polenta, with blueberry sauce. The chicken was juicy, not dry, and the prosciutto wrapping was crispy and delicious. The blueberry sauce was surprisingly good, and not cloyingly sweet as I've had at other Italian places.

We also had a great appetizer of crostino with three different toppings: an herbed cheese with garlic-spiced broccoli, spicy eggplant, and a sweet and delicious chopped tomato, garlic, basil, and balsamic topping.

My s/o had a pasta dish that was quite tasty - penne with a tomato, sausage, ollive, and artichoke sauce. The sauce had obviously been simmered for quite a long time - it wasn't at all acidic, and was quite sweet and had a rich tomato flavor.

Definitely worth a look.
