traditional high-end french food in NYC

I'd like to take my girlfriend for a high-quality, traditional, fairly formal french meal. In other words, not a bistro or brasserie and not one of the top restaurants like Le Bernardin or Daniel that are French in technique and orientation but more avant garde in menu and atmosphere. What's the best in the city? Thanks for your help.
