Out of Towner Needs Manhattan Dinner Recommendations

Hello, part time lurker first time poster on the NYC boards. I have a friend who is working in NY over the summer and I will be visiting him for a week later on this month. This is his first time in the city and has been working quite a bit, hasn’t gone out to eat much.

I was looking for some general recommendations for a fairly nice (nothing too extravagant) dinner for two college male friends. I would like to try something fairly well known and established to get the “New York Expierience”, something along the lines of Sparks, Union Square CafĂ©, Nobu Next Door. Would prefer something very general with a wide assortment of food types (steak, chicken, seafood) but am open to any and all suggestions from the experts.

Also a question on reservations, how far in advance should one generally make reservations at a place such as Sparks, Peter Lugar’s or Gramercy Tavern? Weeks? Days? Day of? Any general guidelines for placing reservations?

Thanks in advance for your help and assistance!
