Toscano Ristorante in Bordentown NJ

I found myself in the Trenton Area yesterday (No I'm not part of the Gov's emergency PR spin team) so I decided to hook up with an old high school buddy for dinner. This place was his suggestion and as you will read, it turned out to be a good one.

The downtown area of Bordentown is very nice.....very similar to Freehold just a little bit smaller but similar in it's appeal. The restaurant is an old row house so it's a bit long and narrow....but not uncomfortable at all. I arrived at about 6pm my buddy was at the bar and there were about 4 other people at the bar as well. The bar is very comfortable and seats about a dozen people in the front of the house....the dining room extends into the back and consists of about 15-20 tables. Place seats about 100 total.

Anywho....had a couple of cocktails took a look at the menu and proceeded to order as appetizers; Muscles Fra' Diavlo and Bacon Dusted Fried Calamari in a sweet and sour sauce. (The description didn't really float my boat but my buddy wanted to try it)

The Muscles were delicious and not in a typical Fra Diavlo sauce.....normally I find this to be in a heavy red sauce or "gravy" with a heavy dose of red pepper seed thrown on. This was very light in more a tomanto and onion broth...with chopped long hot peppers. Nice sized muscles, cleaned very well NO grit and in a very tasty broth.

The fried calamari was also excellent. I wasn't sure what to expect but they were lightly fried and of excellent non-chewy texture. The bacon dusting combined with the sweet and sour sauce was a very nice combination. Very enjoyable.

House salad is typical tossed salad with a house balsamic reduction. Not too heavy just right.

They had about a half dozen of which was a prime dry aged strip on the bone. Those of you who know me know, that was calling my name.....{{ jr......jr.......come to me...........}} I've come to realize I'm at the stage in life when someone say's to me "Jr, you want to go to a strip bar?" this is now what comes to mind. I ordered mine medium and my buddy followed suit but ordering his rare.

As a guy would do in a strip bar when the dj announces a new featured dancer to the stage, when the kitchen doors opened and I got a faint whiff of the charred meat, combined with the tell tale sizzle, my head turned, my eyes bulged, jaw dropped and I started to drool.....oh baby come to pappa!! The server placed the steak down sizzling and served individual slices onto my heated plate, carefully browning each side on the serving plate prior to placing on my dish. While everything was wonderful...the steak was dressed with some fresh rosemary and whole roasted garlic cloves. While the garlic I didn't mind....the rosemary concerned me. Well I'm happy to report my concern was false as the flavors really went well together and were a very happy compliment to this excellent steak. I ate every bite and was honestly surprised to see such a good steak served in a little Italian restaurant in Bordentown, NJ.

I finished the meal with a very nice espresso and some old school sambucca. No desert. A side note I noticed a little too late in the meal, they have Stoli Elite Vodka and only charge $14. for a Elite Martini which is a very fair price.

For a Monday Night this place was more than half full.....and besides us they had a good turn over of people at the bar as well. A lot to be said about a restaurant that can turn that kind of a crowd on a Monday Night.....I guess word is out in the area.

So if you find yourself in that area I strongly suggest giving them a try. Enjoy!
